The project was designed using Gardner's Eight Intelligences Theory. The Lord of the Flies Unit Project was completed on October 18, 2013, and assigned to a grade 11 University English class for their Lord of the Flies novel study. Incorporating the conch shell into the lessons helped the class relate to Ralph’s demand for organization but also assisted their understanding of how difficult it is to maintain rules, respect and an equal form of communication.
Students also said that they even forgot about the conch shell during discussions and times of participation even though they had been using it from the start of the unit. Students agreed that the conch shell had more value at the beginning of the novel study when it was new and interesting and later became annoying and frustrating. At the end of the novel, I asked the students to reflect on the conch shell. The majority of the class became frustrated with the form of communication, which resulted in the students speaking out of turn. When a student wanted to speak during activities and classroom discussions, he/she would have to be holding the conch shell in order to do so and then pass it continue to pass the conch shell to their classmates that also wished to participate. Standard of Practice: Commitment to Students and Student LearningĪt the beginning of the novel study, I brought my own conch shell into the classroom for the students to gain a better insight of the way the characters in the novel tried to communicate with one another. I received a tremendous amount of positive feedback and comments from the staff and faculty at St. This presentation was a great success and experience.
